Most Sportage models have a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that outputs 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. This output is similar to the CX-5's 187 horsepower on non-turbo models. The Sportage includes a 2.0-litre turbo that generates 237 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. This horsepower is actually more than the CX-5's turbo 227 horsepower when used with regular unleaded gasoline.

Of the six available Sportage trims, the base model includes standard FWD. The remaining models have standard AWD, but the CX-5 makes AWD an option more often. With the lower MSRP of many Sportage trims, this creates more value compared to the rising costs of purchasing a CX-5.
